Barons January 20th Update

January 20, 2023 //  by Rebecca Baron//  Leave a Comment

Apparently, it’s been almost a month since our last update. We had Christmas and a nice Christmas break. It felt like an actual rest from the normal constant things to do.

Christmas morning

We did several fun things with my family including going to the temple, shopping, going to a play, ice skating, and a New Year’s Eve Party.

Ice skating with cousins

The last three weeks we have been getting back to school. Megan is taking three UVU concurrent enrollment classes plus Institute, orchestra, and working. Tyler has seven classes this semester, which is one less than last semester, and working.

Kayla has a full schedule this semester, which took a ton of time to work out since her school is very full and all the classes are very full. She seems to like it and I like not having to pick her up early every other day.

Ruby has been very busy with play practices at least three times a week and last weekend she had two five-hour dress rehearsals. She’s very excited for her play to start today.

Norm, Kayla, and I have been busy helping with the play too. Somehow I was in charge of the props so I spent a lot of time going to thrift and craft stores trying to find supplies for props. We (mostly Norm) made quite a few props and we were able to buy others.

I went to a lot of the rehearsals to figure out where and how they used the props so they are in the right place and to make sure we had them all. I’m also helping backstage with costume changes for the performances Ruby isn’t a side lead so I’ve had to go to the dress rehearsals to learn how to do that too.

During all this Ruby got her food handlers permit and started volunteering at Scera on Saturday afternoons and she thinks it is lots of fun.

Kayla got on the high honor roll last term so she got to go to a party during school and get a certificate, pizza, and a candy bar.

Ruby went to the podiatrist since she still has a lot of foot pain. He looked at her foot and said it looks like she has a problem that is common in people that need the surgery she had. It’s hard to explain in words but basically, her heels are really flexible and that makes the back of her foot move to the side easily.

She has noticed her foot collapsing a lot and twisting to the side. The first solution to try is custom orthotics. They did a laser image of her foot a few weeks ago and then she goes next week to get the orthotics. It is made to go into just the back half of a shoe and has sides around her heel. The idea is to hold her heel in place and keep it from twisting.

He said there’s a good chance it should work but if it doesn’t then there is an option of having permanent orthotics put in, which is a screw that will hold her heel in place at all times. He said the surgery recovery is a lot better than her last surgeries. She would have to wear a boot day and night for up to a month but doesn’t need a cast or crutches, etc.

It would even be possible to do both surgeries at the same time. He said most adults can’t figure out how to walk with two boots very easily but most children can figure it out pretty well. We are obviously hoping we don’t have to do this option but if we do, it shouldn’t be for a while because she needs to give the orthotics a try for a few months.
